Jay Carney resigns as the White House press secretary
by Nathan'ette Burdine: June 15, 2014

On May 30, 2014, President Obama announced that White House Press Secretary Jay Carney will be resigning in June 2014.

President Obama told the press that Carney approached him in April about stepping down. Carney has been the press secretary since 2011.

Prior to joining the White House, Carney worked with Vice President Joe Biden as Biden’s director of communications.

President Obama praised Carney for the work he’s done and told the press to “take it easy” on him during his last couple of weeks.

The president also stated that Deputy White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest will be able to step in and assume the duties of the White House Press Secretary.

Earnest has been with Obama since 2008, and has served as the Deputy White House Press Secretary since 2011.
